Five Elements Cycles
The Five Elements Cycles: How Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water Relate
The generating cycle runs Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water. The controlling cycle skips one element each step. Learn those two loops and the element of each stem and branch, and most Ba Zi relationships become readable.

Generating cycle: Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates Earth, Earth produces Metal, Metal carries Water, and Water nourishes Wood. Controlling cycle: Wood controls Earth, Earth controls Water, Water controls Fire, Fire controls Metal, and Metal controls Wood. Neither cycle is good or bad by itself; in Ba Zi, strength and the chart's needs decide the effect.
The two cycles at a glance
Generating cycle: Wood feeds Fire, Fire leaves Earth as ash, Earth yields Metal ore, Metal condenses Water, and Water nourishes Wood.
Controlling cycle: Wood roots break up Earth, Earth dams Water, Water puts out Fire, Fire melts Metal, and a Metal axe cuts Wood.
Place the elements in a circle in the order Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water. Each one generates its neighbor and controls the element one step beyond it.
Quick reference for each element
Wood: generates Fire, controls Earth; generated by Water, controlled by Metal.
Fire: generates Earth, controls Metal; generated by Wood, controlled by Water.
Earth: generates Metal, controls Water; generated by Fire, controlled by Wood.
Metal: generates Water, controls Wood; generated by Earth, controlled by Fire.
Water: generates Wood, controls Fire; generated by Metal, controlled by Earth.
Elements of the stems and branches
Heavenly Stems: Jia and Yi are Wood, Bing and Ding are Fire, Wu and Ji are Earth, Geng and Xin are Metal, Ren and Gui are Water. The first in each pair is Yang and the second is Yin.
Earthly Branches: Yin and Mao are Wood, Si and Wu are Fire, Shen and You are Metal, Hai and Zi are Water, and Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei are Earth.
The four Earth branches sit at the turn of each season, which is why they share one element. Branches also hold hidden stems, so the visible element is only part of the picture.
Generating is not always good, controlling is not always bad
Too much support can backfire. Excess Water can float Wood away, excess Wood can smother Fire, and excess Earth can bury Metal.
A controlled element can also push back when it is strong enough. Very hard Wood can chip a Metal blade, and heavy Earth can snap Wood.
That is why control in a Ba Zi chart is not automatically unlucky. A strong Day Master can use some restraint, while a weak one usually benefits from support.
How Ba Zi turns the cycles into Ten Gods
Ba Zi treats the Day Stem as you, then sorts the other elements into five groups: the same as you, what you generate, what you control, what controls you, and what generates you.
For a Jia Wood Day Master, Wood is the peer group, Fire is output, Earth is wealth, Metal is authority, and Water is resource.
To decide which element actually helps you, read it together with the birth month, roots, and Day Master strength.
Using the cycles sensibly
The elements also map to directions and colors: Wood to east and green, Fire to south and red, Earth to the center and yellow, Metal to west and white, Water to north and black. Treat these as cultural references.
A controlling relationship between two people's elements does not mean they are incompatible. Names, relationships, and feng shui all need a whole-picture reading.
Traditional links between elements and organs are not medical advice. Please see a doctor about health concerns.
How to Get Started
- 1Memorize the generating order: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water.
- 2Remember that each element controls the one two steps ahead.
- 3Convert every stem and branch in the chart into its element.
- 4Use the Day Stem as you and label each relationship.
- 5Check the birth month and strength before judging the effect.
Common Mistakes
- Reversing the direction, such as saying Earth controls Wood.
- Assuming generating is always good and controlling is always bad.
- Counting elements while ignoring the birth month and hidden stems.
- Deciding two people are incompatible from one element clash.
- Treating element and organ associations as a diagnosis.
