Should You Use True Solar Time in Zi Wei?
Zi Wei is more hour-sensitive than Ba Zi. True solar time folds clock time back to the local sun. Crossing a two-hour boundary can rewrite the Life Palace and the whole star map.

Turn it on if you know the birth city. Near 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, or 23 o'clock, or far from 120°E, the Life Palace can change. Without a birthplace, keep clock time—do not pick a random city to 'correct' it.
Why Zi Wei feels a longitude gap more than Ba Zi
In Ba Zi, true solar time usually moves only the Hour Pillar. In Zi Wei the Life Palace is set from lunar month plus birth hour: one hour-branch back, and the Life Palace steps back one palace. Main stars, transformations, and the start of major limits all move with it.
Most civil times in China are Beijing Time, locked to 120°E near Hangzhou and Shanghai. Local solar time follows longitude: about four minutes per degree. Urumqi (about 87°36′E) runs roughly 130 minutes behind; Chengdu (about 104°04′E) about 64; Xi'an (about 108°56′E) about 44; Shanghai (about 121°28′E) only about 6 minutes ahead.
Correction folds clock time back to local solar time, then assigns the two-hour branch. Zi Wei charts by that branch; minutes decide whether you crossed a boundary.
When it must be on, and when it changes nothing
Branches change every two hours. The chart rewrites only if converted time crosses a boundary. A new Life Palace can reshuffle Body Palace, all twelve palaces, and the five-element class—not a one-word edit.
Born in Chengdu at 9:15 clock time (Chen hour): minus about 64 minutes lands at 8:11, Mao hour. The Life Palace steps back and the main stars replot. Born in Shanghai or Hangzhou at 10:00: a few minutes still sit inside Chen, so both settings usually match.
Xi'an at 23:20 is sharper. Clock time is already next-day Zi hour; minus about 44 minutes returns 22:36, Hai hour of the same day. The Life Palace changes, and the lunar date may change too. Zi Wei's Purple Star is placed by lunar day, so a date shift moves the majors.
On the east coast, mid-branch, the toggle is optional. West of 120°E, or within about fifteen minutes of an odd hour, turn it on.
Do not force it without a birthplace
True solar time needs a longitude. The wrong city corrects in the wrong direction and can break a Life Palace that was fine. One palace error in Zi Wei costs more than one Hour Pillar in Ba Zi.
If you know the province but not the city, chart once with clock time, then compare a provincial-capital longitude. If the Life Palace moves, mark it as pending.
If the birthplace is unknown, do not pick a city to look more professional. A shaky hour plus a guessed longitude is worse than clock time with a note.
What to check after turning it on
If the Life Palace branch stays put, keep reading the twelve palaces as before. If it moves, stop: reread Life, Body, and the related palace group. Old sentences do not carry over.
A Life Palace change is not a late-life tweak. Character tone and the star-to-palace map for career, wealth, and relationships all shift.
Near 11 p.m., check the lunar date as well. A date change can move the Purple Star and even the five-element class.
