What Is Kui Gang in Ba Zi?
Kui Gang names four special day pillars—Geng Chen, Geng Xu, Ren Chen, Wu Xu. The classics say they carry the stern air of heaven and earth: decisive, unbending, a fine blade in need of a good sheath.
A day pillar of Geng Chen, Geng Xu, Ren Chen, or Wu Xu is Kui Gang. Its core temperament is resolve, principle, and forceful execution. Tradition says it favors a strong Day Master and fears clashes and revealed Wealth or Officer stars. Read today, it is a vivid endowment—everything depends on where you point it.
The name and the four pillars
Kui and Gang come from the Big Dipper—the bowl's head and the handle, positions of stern command in star lore. Chen and Xu are the branches of extremity.
The four stem-branch pairs set hard yang stems over these branches, and the ancients read them as pillars of unyielding force.
Kui Gang is judged from the day pillar—the pillar that stands for you. The same pairs in the year or month pillar are generally not counted.
The temperament it marks
The classical portrait: sharp, decisive, allergic to injustice, fiercely principled, a word once given never taken back.
Its bright side is command and execution—the nerve to decide and the shoulders to carry, rising fast where boldness and discipline are prized.
Its shadow is rigidity: unwilling to bow, unskilled at detours, prone to giving offense and to extremes. The lifelong assignment is fitting a sheath to the blade.
When the structure holds or breaks
Classically, Kui Gang needs a strong, rooted Day Master to wield its force; then the books promise authority and name.
It fears clashes on the day branch—the Chen-Xu clash above all—which unbalance the hard qi and, tradition says, bring upheaval.
It also dislikes revealed Wealth and Officer stars, which scatter its pure force. These are classical rules; real judgment still returns to the whole chart.
In a woman's chart: old verdicts, new reading
Old texts frowned on Kui Gang in women's charts—'too fierce, overshadows the husband.' That framing carries its era's expectations and needs revision.
Today the same decisiveness is a rare professional asset. The 'marriage difficulty' is really a strong character needing an equal, mutually respectful partnership.
Marriage still reads from the spouse palace, spouse star, timing, and real relating—never from one pillar's label.
Pointing the force well
Kui Gang suits arenas demanding resolve and discipline: law enforcement, military and police, surgery, audit, competitive sports, crisis management, hard-mode entrepreneurship.
Practical guardrails: leave buffer on big decisions, count three in conflicts, spend the 'no compromise' on principles rather than details.
In years when cycles clash Chen and Xu, deliberately lower the intensity and avoid head-on collisions—the most useful single piece of timing advice for these charts.
How to Get Started
- 1Chart and check whether the day pillar is Geng Chen, Geng Xu, Ren Chen, or Wu Xu.
- 2Judge Day Master strength; strong carries it, weak needs support first.
- 3Check the day branch for clashes, especially Chen-Xu.
- 4See whether revealed Wealth or Officer stars disturb the structure.
- 5Mark the cycle years that clash the day branch.
- 6Aim the decisiveness at fields that need it.
Common Mistakes
- Counting year or month pillars as Kui Gang.
- Reading the old dire verdicts as fate, ignoring strength.
- Declaring a woman's marriage doomed by the pillar.
- Applying the Wealth-Officer taboo as absolute law without the whole chart.
- Choosing a career of constant diplomacy against a temperament of edges.

FAQ
Neither. It is a vivid endowment: with a strong Day Master it commands; broken, it churns. Aimed well it is an asset; aimed poorly, attrition.
The day pillar. The same pairs elsewhere are traditionally not counted and matter far less.
