Questioning & Timing
How to Phrase Yi Jing Questions & Pinpoint Outcome Timing (Ying Qi)
In Yi Jing divination, a clear question is half the reading, and pinpointing the timing (Ying Qi) is how the reading lands in real life. Framing one focused question and reading the hexagram's 'bottleneck clock' turns divination into a practical decision tool.

Before casting, follow three questioning rules: ask one specific matter per cast, include a realistic timeframe, and never re-cast repeatedly out of anxiety ('the first cast informs; repeated casts cloud the mind'). After judging whether the outcome succeeds, pinpoint timing (Ying Qi) by finding what holds the Useful God back: a static line triggers on its matching or clashing day; a moving line triggers on its matching or combining day; a bound or vaulted line triggers when clashed open; and a False Void line triggers when exiting Void.
Part 1: Framing a clear question (and how to handle 'Option A vs. Option B')
**1. One focus per cast**: Avoid asking 'Should I take Job A or Job B?' inside a single cast, because one hexagram has only one Self line and one Official/Wealth Useful God. Instead, cast once for Option A ('How will things unfold if I join Company A?') and cast a second separate hexagram for Option B to compare.
**2. Include a timeframe**: 'Can this project close this quarter?' reads far more cleanly than 'Will I ever be rich?'
**3. Respect the first cast**: Never re-toss coins five times in ten minutes hoping for a prettier hexagram.
Part 2: The four classical keys for pinpointing Timing (Ying Qi)
Once elemental interactions confirm the matter will succeed, find the branch day or month that resolves the Useful God's temporary state:
**1. Static Useful God**: Manifests on the day/month matching its own branch (**Filling**) or clashing it awake (**Clash**).
**2. Moving Useful God**: Manifests on the day/month matching its branch or forming a Six-Harmony (**Combination**) with it.
**3. Bound or Vaulted Useful God**: If held by a combination or tucked inside a Vault (Chen/Xu/Chou/Wei), it manifests when a transit **clashes open** the bond or vault.
**4. Useful God in False Void**: Manifests when the calendar **exits the 10-day cycle or clashes the Void branch**.
Matching the clock scale to real-world common sense
For fast matters (a package delivery, a reply this week), read the branch as the **Day**; for medium-horizon goals (job hunting or selling a home this year), read the branch as the **Solar Month**.
시작하는 방법
- 1Write down one clear, single-focus question with a realistic time window before casting.
- 2Determine first whether the Useful God is strong and supported enough for the matter to succeed.
- 3Identify the Useful God's current bottleneck (static, moving, bound, vaulted, or in Void).
- 4Match the resolving branch to the appropriate Day or Month scale.
흔한 오해
- Packing 'Option A vs. Option B' into a single muddled question.
- Re-casting the same question repeatedly within minutes because you disliked the first hexagram.
- Trying to calculate a success date when the hexagram already shows the Useful God is exhausted and the matter won't succeed.

자주 묻는 질문
Cast two separate hexagrams—one dedicated to Option A and one dedicated to Option B—then compare which hexagram gives stronger support to your Self Line and Useful God.
